Infinitives

¡Hola estudiantes! Today we are going to talk about infinitives in Spanish. Infinitives are the base form of a verb that have not been conjugated to show tense, mood or subject. In English, they are often preceded by the word “to”, such as “to walk” or “to eat”.

In Spanish, infinitives always end in -ar, -er or -ir. For example, the infinitive form of the verb “hablar” (to speak) ends in -ar, while the infinitive form of the verb “comer” (to eat) ends in -er, and the infinitive form of the verb “vivir” (to live) ends in -ir.

Infinitives can be used in a variety of ways in Spanish. Some common uses include:

  1. As the subject of a sentence: “Estudiar es importante” (Studying is important)
  2. As the object of a verb: “Me gusta leer” (I like to read)
  3. As the object of a preposition: “Voy a correr en el parque” (I’m going to run in the park)
  4. To form the imperative mood: “Hablar con claridad” (Speak clearly)

It’s important to note that when using two verbs together in Spanish, the second verb is often in the infinitive form. For example, “voy a comer” (I’m going to eat) or “quiero estudiar” (I want to study).

In conclusion, infinitives are an important part of the Spanish language, and are used in a variety of ways. Whether you’re using them as the subject or object of a sentence, or to form the imperative mood, understanding infinitives is essential for becoming a fluent Spanish speaker. ¡Hasta la próxima clase!
