Subject Pronouns

¡Hola estudiantes! Today, we are going to talk about subject pronouns in Spanish. Subject pronouns are words that replace the subject of a sentence. In English, we use pronouns like “I,” “you,” “he,” “she,” “it,” “we,” and “they.” Similarly, in Spanish, we use subject pronouns to replace the subject of a sentence.

In Spanish, there are six subject pronouns that correspond to the different persons and numbers. These are:

  • yo (I)
  • tú (you)
  • él (he) / ella (she)
  • usted (formal “you”)
  • nosotros/nosotras (we)
  • ellos/ellas (they)

It’s important to note that the subject pronoun “ustedes” is also used in Latin American countries to mean “you all” or “y’all.” In Spain, the subject pronoun “vosotros/vosotras” is used to mean “you all.”

Now, let’s take a closer look at each subject pronoun:

  • “Yo” is used when referring to oneself as the subject of the sentence.
  • “Tú” is used when speaking informally to one person who is familiar or of the same age or social level.
  • “Él” is used to refer to a male third person singular subject (he).
  • “Ella” is used to refer to a female third person singular subject (she).
  • “Usted” is used to refer to a formal second person singular subject (you).
  • “Nosotros/nosotras” is used to refer to a first person plural subject (we). “Nosotras” is used when the group consists of only females.
  • “Ellos/ellas” is used to refer to a third person plural subject (they). “Ellas” is used when the group consists of only females.

In summary, subject pronouns are an essential part of the Spanish language as they allow us to replace the subject of a sentence with a pronoun.
