- 1946H. Crosbie Hucks and Jack Napier begin developing whisky at Gilbey Canada's Toronto gin distillery.
- 1951The Gilbey team has developed the Black Velvet family of blends and bulk US sales begin to build the brand.
- 1973Palliser Distillery opens in Lethbridge to supply Black Velvet and other Gilbey brands for western markets.
- 1990Gilbey/IDV closes the Toronto distillery and shifts all production to Lethbridge, securing the plant's long-term survival.
- 1999Diageo sells the distillery and its brands to Canandaigua/Constellation Brands.
