Speyside whisky distillery
Speyside Distillery stood at Tromie Mills near Kingussie, in the south of the Speyside region, drawing its water from the River Tromie. It was the long project of George Christie, who acquired the site (a former barley mill) in the early 1960s and had the distillery hand-built in stone over the following decades.
Building work ran from 1962, with the distillery completed in 1987, and the first spirit finally ran on 12 December 1990. Its first single malt was released as Drumguish, named after a lost distillery nearby. With one wash still and one spirit still, it was among the smallest distilleries in Scotland.
The distillery was owned by Harvey’s of Edinburgh and operated under lease by Speyside Distillers Co., producing the Spey range of single malts alongside Beinn Dubh and Byron’s Gin. The lease expired in 2025 and the distillery closed; its stills were removed for storage at Forsyths in Rothes, with production set to move to a new site.
