Isle of Jura Timeline:

1600s: The first distillery dates back from the 17th century in its successors grounds. Only little remains from this time

1810: Said to have been founded

1831-32: William Abercrombie

1832-52: Archibald Fletcher

1852: J. & A. Gardner

1853: Norman Buchanan

1867-72: J.K. & D. Orr, when partners retired

1876: Taken over by James Ferguson & Sons and rebuilt

1896: James Ferguson & Sons listed as being at ’Small Isles, Lagg, Jura’, but this was the same distillery

1903: James Ferguson & Sons listed as being at ’Small Isles, Lagg, Jura’, but this was the same distillery

1907: James Ferguson & Sons listed as being at ’Small Isles, Lagg, Jura’, but this was the same distillery

WWI: Probably abandoned during the First World War

1960-63: The present distillery was rebuilt by the Jura Distillery Co. Ltd., controlled by Mackinlay McPherson Ltd., subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd., which also controlled Charles Mackinlay & Co. Ltd., using parts of the elder, to create work on the island. Assistance came from Scottish Brewers and William Delmé Evans was responsible for the design (1958 mentioned as well)

1963: The new distillery opened

1974: The first single malt came available

1978: Extended from two to four stills

1985: Mackinlay McPherson Ltd. and Charles Mackinlay & Co. Ltd. being bought by the Invergordon Distillers Group

1991: A gold medal was won with the 10 years old single malt on the International Wine and Spirit Competition

1993: The Invergordon Group was taken over by Whyte & Mackay Ltd.

1999: Owned by Jim Beam (JBB)

2004: Owned by Whyte & Mackay Ltd.
