1819Built at Brora by the Marquis of Stafford (1st Duke of Sutherland) as an outlet for crofters' cereals after the Clearances.
1885Barnard visits; records a quadrangle of stone buildings, 13ft mash tun, 3,000-gallon washbacks, overshot water wheel.
1896Bought by James Ainslie.
1912Company goes bankrupt; taken over by a Leith firm part-owned by DCL.
1930DCL takes full ownership, transfers to SMD.
1931Mothballed 1931-9.
1967A new distillery built alongside (opened 1969), named Clynelish; the old plant renamed Brora.
1983Brora mothballed indefinitely by DCL with more than a dozen other distilleries.
1983Closed 1983; the original Brora site fell silent (the modern 'Brora' was revived by Diageo as a separate distillery in 2021 — see the Brora row).
